Acupuncture is somewhat of an age old practice that still exists today. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting needles in specific points in the body for pain relief and activation of the body's self-healing processes. By stimulating the central nervous system, acupuncture regulates blood pressure. Pain relief and healing are brought about by the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters, respectively.

Hormonal imbalance is one of the fortes of acupuncture when combined with other infertility treatments. The regulation of the body pumps more blood to the vital organs, thereby balancing the hormonal levels. This hormonal balance is achieved with the regulation of the blood flow. The function of the ovaries and follicle are improved. The endometrium grows think, rich linings due to the increased blood flow. Acupuncture also increases the success rates of ART methods such as in vitro fertilization, or IVF. In fact, fertility specialists now recommend acupuncture to work with their infertility treatment programs. Most people who underwent acupuncture before undergoing IVF are now proud parents. Acupuncture also remedies spasmed tubes. Acupuncture's effectiveness is increased when you use herbal medicines along with it; thereby treating elevated follicle stimulating hormones, reduces likelihood of miscarriages, unexplained infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and sperm DNA fragmentation for males.

Acupuncture activates the natural healing processes of our bodies. As the saying goes, the more the merrier. Females often undergo medical treatment before engaging in an ART method.  Acupuncture is often included in this treatment. This is because of the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. It can be extremely stressful for the couple a few weeks or days before the actual ART process. This is easily remedied with acupuncture, as it is proven to have positive effects with anxiety and depression as well. There are other methods that increase the success rates of ART, and couples must go out of their way to look for these other pieces of the puzzle.

Acupuncture doesn't have a lot of negative effects on women when used in preparation for ART techniques. Needles placed on the wrong points of the body, however, can induce a miscarriage on a pregnant woman. So it is best if the acupuncturist is experienced and specializes in infertility treatments. Electro-acupuncture works just as well as any painkiller during labor. It also speeds up the healing process, which results to a shorter hospital stay and lower hospital bill.

Acupuncture, along with herbal medications, have the highest chances of success when used in tandem with ART methods. Without ART, however, acupuncture and herbs alone won't induce pregnancy.
