Location
( L.I.-17 Heaven’s Tripod TIANDING - Acupuncture Points ) On the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, 1 cun below the laryngeal prominence (➞ 3.2).
How to find
This point is located on the lateral musculature of the neck, directly posterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. By rotating the patient’s head to the opposite side, this muscle will become more visible and palpable. ➞L.I.-18 is located 1 cun superior to L.I.-17, between the two heads of the sternocleidomastoid.
Needling
Rotate the head back to its normal position before needle insertion.
Vertically 0.3–0.5 cun or obliquely up to 0.8 cun. Caution: Carotid artery, jugular vein.
