In fact, seventy five percent of the participants who underwent therapeutic massage therapy were relieved of their back pain.

A total of 262 patients aged 20 to 70 participated in the study. All were suffering from persistent back pain and many of them were not relieved by the pain medication they were taking. They had no other serious diseases. The participants were assigned randomly to a self care group, an acupuncture group and a massage therapy group. The self care group was given materials on self care. The acupuncture group was given acupuncture treatments. The massage therapy group was given Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and trigger point massage sessions. Ten weeks later, members of the massage therapy group had more pain relief and less disability as compared to the members of the other two groups. One year later, members of the massage therapy group still had the least pain relief medication with better results.
