Can acupuncture help with hemorrhoids? Yes, it can. Patients, at Metis Acupuncture Clinics, are always pleasantly surprised that acupuncture can greatly help with hemorrhoid pain. Specifically, acupuncture can help with hemorrhoid pain and it can help with pain during a bowel movement.

Hemorrhoids are very common and painful. In fact, 4% of the American population at one point or another will experience hemorrhoid pain and discomfort.

Hemorrhoids are often related to chronic constipation. Dry stools can strain the rectal tissue, thus causing hemorrhoids. In addition, hemorrhoids can be due to increased intake of alcohol, spicy and/or greasy, fried foods. Lack of exercise; sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time; excess sex and/or pregnancy can also cause hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are generally classified into two categories. Patients can either have pain from internal hemorrhoids and/or from external hemorrhoids. Acupuncture can greatly help with both internal and/or external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids occur when veins swell inside the anal canal. External hemorrhoids occur when veins swell just outside the opening of the anal canal. Sometimes hemorrhoids can cause bleeding.

Patients, who seek acupuncture treatment for their hemorrhoid discomfort, usually see their pain, discomfort, itchiness, and bleeding either fully disappear or greatly reduce in intensity.

It is very important to note that the acupuncture points used to treat hemorrhoid pain, at our Portland Acupuncture Clinics, are not placed near the anus, but are rather placed distally, in the forearms, hands, lower legs, and feet. Thus, patients can get great long-term relief for their hemorrhoid pain, through acupuncture at our Portland Acupuncture Clinics, without disrobing.

In addition to acupuncture, we, at our Portland Acupuncture Clinics, can offer nutritional counseling and/or Chinese Herbal Medicine for your hemorrhoid pain. Common recommendations may include adding figs, plums, prunes, pineapples, fish, etc. to your diet. We, at our Portland Acupuncture Clinics, may also offer remedies such as eating a banana daily in the morning on an empty stomach for your hemorrhoid pain.
